🎯 “He Seemed So Nice…” — Why You Really Need to Research Your Window Company

Joe Underwood • June 27, 2025

Don't fall for shiny shoes and smoother talk—here’s how to research the company behind the sales pitch (before they ghost you with your deposit).

🏡 So You Met a Sales Guy…

Let me guess. A guy in a branded polo shirt showed up to your door, smiled big, handed you a glossy brochure, and promised, “We’re the best in Florida.”

Next thing you know, he’s pulling out a clipboard, offering you a today-only special, and name-dropping a product so hard you’d think it cured arthritis. And then, with all the enthusiasm of a game show host, he blurts out the golden phrase:

“All of our installers are W2 employees, our company’s been around forever, and we have 5-star reviews!”

Hold up. Before you sign anything, let’s pump the brakes and look behind the curtain.

💼 Who’s Really at the Door?

Here’s the truth: Most sales guys in the window and door industry are 1099 contractors.

Translation? They don’t work for the company—they work for the commission. So when they’re pitching their company as if it’s the holy grail of home improvement, understand that their paycheck depends on convincing you to believe it.

And guess what? They’re not the ones who will actually install the windows.

In fact, many times, they couldn’t tell you what a nail fin or stucco flange is if you handed them a diagram and a flashlight.

So what’s a homeowner to do?

🔍 Do Your Research—Like, Real Research

This isn’t Amazon. You’re not buying a garden hose. You’re spending thousands of dollars on something that protects your home, your family, and possibly your resale value.

So don’t rely on a smile and a free pen. You’ve got homework to do:

1. Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

If the company’s not BBB-accredited, ask yourself: Why not?

It’s literally $250 a year to become accredited if the company is in good standing. The BBB:

  • Checks backgrounds, ownership history, and management changes
  • Cross-checks complaints across multiple platforms
  • Rates businesses from A+ to F (and no, F doesn’t stand for “Fantastic”)

Bottom line? If they’re not listed, they’re either too new, trying to hide something, or dodging accountability.

2. Don’t Just Trust Google Reviews

Everyone loves to cherry-pick their glowing reviews. But you need to go deeper:

  • Google: Yes, start here—but sort by Lowest reviews, not just “Most Relevant.”
  • Yelp: Much stricter. Yelp requires background verification for businesses. A bad Yelp score is usually a major red flag.
  • Angi/HomeAdvisor/Thumbtack: Many of these platforms vet businesses before listing them. See how they’re reviewed by real, often frustrated, homeowners.
  • Facebook: Did someone tag the company in a rant? Was the owner arguing in the comments? Red flag.

Oh—and be wary of too many 5-star reviews that sound like they were written by someone’s cousin.

3. Look for Transparency, Not Just Testimonials

When you visit the company’s website (like ours at www.wretropro.com 😎), look for:

  • Their license number (in Florida, it’s required!)
  • Clear explanation of their installation process
  • Whether they work with multiple manufacturers (not just one brand they’re pushing)
  • Real photos of completed work, not just stock images

Companies that are legit don’t hide the fine print—they highlight it.

😬 Red Flags You Shouldn’t Ignore

  • Sales guy says, “We don’t need a permit where you live.” (Wrong.)
  • No mention of product or labor warranties (Or they say, “We don’t really have warranty issues.”)
  • Company name recently changed (but the reviews from the “old company” mysteriously disappeared)
  • No online presence outside of Google
  • BBB rating is C or lower (or worse—no record at all)

💡 Final Word from a Real Contractor

At Windoor Retro Professionals, we don’t just talk the talk—we install the window.

Our reviews are real. We’re licensed, insured, BBB-accredited, and transparent about how we operate, who we work with, and how your home will be treated. We use multiple brands like Eastern Architectural Systems, Simonton, PGT, CWS by Pella, and others—not just one we’re locked into.

We believe homeowners deserve more than pressure tactics and vague promises. You deserve facts, honesty, and a real plan for your project.

So the next time a sales rep shows up promising the moon, smile, nod, and then Google the company like your home depends on it—because it kind of does.
